Gugulethu Xofa Gets Candid About Influencers

Gugulethu Xofa feels some type of way about online influencers getting “preferential treatment” over trained actors and actresses in the entertainment industry.

In an interview with a local media outlet (published on Thursday, 9 May), the “Redemption” actress bemoaned the fact that social media stars are getting attention from producers and directors at the expense of actual talent.

“A lot of aspiring actors flock to theatres to be great actors, but get to the auditions to be sidelined by influencers,” she said. “Auditions are no longer about talent, but rather about how many followers you have on your social pages.”

Xofa gave an example: “Even on set, influencers get preferential treatment over us. They can skip their lines continuously and they won’t get reprimanded, but if you skip one line, then all hell will break loose.”

As a result, Xofa believes that influencers have changed the face of the entertainment industry for the worse, especially in Mzansi, where bonafide talent are already struggling to make names for themselves.

“Our industry is in shambles and it’s dying a slow death due to shortcut-takers who are flooding into the entertainment scene,” she said.
